St. Caius Chapel: guardian of folk legends on Nevistina Stina

Perched on a dramatic rock along the ancient path connecting Lower and Upper Brela, the Chapel of St. Caius (Kapelica sv. Kaje) is the oldest preserved chapel in the area. Built in the 18th century, this miniature structure stands as a silent witness to centuries of journeys and folk beliefs at 494 meters above sea level.

History and tradition
Dedicated to St. Caius, a Pope of Dalmatian origin, the chapel was mentioned as early as 1768. Its construction was encouraged by the renowned Bishop of Makarska, Nikola Bijanković. It is situated on a strategic mountain pass surrounded by archaeological sites, including prehistoric and medieval burial grounds, which lend a deep historical significance to the entire location.

Traces of the past and local legends
The area around St. Caius has always sparked the imagination and respect of travelers. Local residents still cherish stories passed down through generations:

The apparition of Our Lady: according to legend, the Virgin Mary appeared on a nearby saddle to warn the people of Brela of an impending attack by the Senjani (pirates), miraculously saving the village. A cross once stood at that spot, which travelers would reverently kiss every time they passed by.

The fairy circle: above the chapel, there is a stone slab shaped like a wheel. Old inhabitants of Brela used to warn children not to cross it, believing it was a place where fairies danced their circles (kolo), instilling a sense of awe for the hidden spirits of the mountain.

A viewpoint with a majestic vista
Beyond its historical and spiritual value, St. Caius is one of the most beautiful panoramic points on Biokovo. From here, visitors can enjoy a magnificent view of the Makarska Riviera and the islands, while the traces of the historic French Road (Napoleon's Road)—another protected monument of this region—are clearly visible below.

Visitor tip: The chapel is located on the historic hiking path toward the Nevista pass. It is an ideal stop for a hiking excursion, offering perfect photo opportunities and an authentic experience of the Biokovo karst landscape.
