At the foot of Biokovo, between Omiš and Makarska, you will find Brela, a desirable destination that meets the needs of visitors for peace, nature, entertainment, recreation, family vacation… Brela also has a rich and varied gastronomic offer.
What makes Brela a must-see summer location are beautiful and unique beaches. The most famous beach “Punta Rata” has been included on the list of the 10 most beautiful beaches in the world by Forbes, in 2004. The well-known Punta Rata is part of a 7 kilometre long coastal section from Jakiruša to Loznica with pebble beaches. The variety of beaches favours the needs of visitors who want to enjoy untouched nature and the view of Kamen Brela, the smallest Adriatic island with Aleppo pine trees, a recognizable symbol of Brela and Croatia.
Islet of Kamen Brela is a boulder of breccia – a rock composed out of interconnected broken fragments of minerals and rocks with unique vegetation of the Croatian coast. It is located in a protected area. However, in addition to the already mentioned pine trees, the beach Punta Rata is covered with myrtle, strawberry tree and other Mediterranean types of plants that, in addition to the shade they create, also have an extremely relaxing effect with their fresh scent. It is interesting that the Kamen Brela skerry is often used to promote Croatia as an attractive place for summer vacations, and also embellishes the coat of arms of the municipality of Brela. The photos you will take here do not need to be filtered, because they will already look like they have been edited. The turquoise blue sea invites you to rest your eyes, soul and body, so each of your photos actually looks like a beautiful postcard from Brela.
Back in 1930s, special containers have been placed on Punta Rata beach to extract salt from seawater. The salt was then carried behind Biokovo mountain and sold or exchanged for other necessary products (before electrification, meat would be salted and thus preserved from spoilage, and in that time people used much larger amounts of salt). Today, the importance of the Punta Rata beach is in preservation of its coastal ecosystems. The research started in 1968 and completed in 2022 concluded that 27% of Croatian beaches have damaged ecosystem due to levelling, and lack of care is in favour of further damage. The beaches of Brela thus bear witness to untouched nature, in which only some equipment for entertainment and better experience of vacation have been added.
For those searching for fun and active holidays, there are beaches where you can refresh yourself in numerous beach bars and restaurants located along the promenade, or try your adventurous spirit, whether it's jet skiing, renting a boat, or parasailing. You can dive with the small family business 'Bikini Dive', which is located next to Stari Porat beach, and go for underwater exploration or attend a SCUBA diving school. Next to the Maestral beach, you have the option of a street workout with about a dozen workout machines, and several of them are also located along the promenade in Stomarica bay, Podrače bay and along the promenade in the Jardula area.
In the early morning one can meet a large number of recreationists on the promenade, be it running or Nordic walking. If you are looking for hidden or "wild" beaches, you can also find Vruja beach along the promenade. The only beach for dogs is Pročiok, located between Stomaric and Podcrkavlje. Also worth to mention is the Medvidina cave with a small beach where a Mediterranean monk seal used to live in the past, as well as beautiful Loznica bay.
The evidence that Brela and its coastline have been popular in Roman times are the amphorae fragments and finer Roman and Hellenistic ceramics from the 3rd/2nd century BC., found at the bottom of the beach in Jakiruša bay. The amphorae have been used to transport Northern Italian wine to the East Mediterranean or to the Eastern Adriatic market. Traffic along the coast has been carried out by small cabotage, and ships could easily find shelter from storms in peaceful bays.
And finally, for romantic souls there are indispensable sunset and night walks along the beach. So Brela is truly small place for great vacation, with the possibility to create your own free time according to your interests and wishes. Are you more interested in nature or socializing, or both, decide and find the beach that is just right for you. Therefore, we suggest to go around and explore the promenade and settle on the beach you will always return to.
