Filipovići house complex in Soline

Historical nucleus and former seaside fortification

The rural Filipovići complex represents the very core of the settlement above Soline Bay. Although its original form is barely recognizable today, this complex is the historical heart around which the modern-day village eventually developed.

Defensive architecture: houses that were once towers
A distinctive feature of older residential and commercial complexes in this part of Dalmatia was their defensive role. The Filipovići complex was originally designed with fortified architecture to protect against attacks from the sea:

Towers with loopholes: the complex originally featured two defensive towers equipped with loopholes (small openings for firearms).
Conversion: during more peaceful times, both towers were modified and converted into residential houses, losing much of their original military appearance.

Historical context
Better-preserved examples of similar fortified residential complexes can be found in neighboring coastal towns such as Tučepi, Podgora, Igrane, and Drvenik. The Filipovići complex stands as a testament to an era when coastal living required constant vigilance and architecture that could provide protection; today, it remains a silent monument to the early urban development of Soline.
